About Mr. Matthew Liew

Mr. Matthew Liew has been a consultant urologist in Wigan since 2017. His specializations include urinary stone disease, bladder cancer, prostate cancer diagnostics, and HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate). During his first year, he served as Clinical Director and has received 3 Clinical Excellence Awards (CEAs). Matthew focuses on enhancing patient pathways for better outcomes.

Mr. Liew is an innovator in HoLEP surgery, which is considered the gold standard for treating prostate enlargement. Compared to traditional treatments like TURP, HoLEP offers reduced bleeding, shorter hospital stays, and longer-lasting benefits. He is currently the only HoLEP surgeon in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Yorkshire. He has also been an invited speaker on HoLEP and chaired a BAUS session on BPH/LUTS.

Mr. Liew was the first UK surgeon to perform male circumcision using the CircCurerTM device. He has mentored many urologists on this technique and presented his findings nationally, highlighting rapid surgery times, suitability for local anesthesia, low post-operative pain, and high patient satisfaction.

Mr. Liew performs laser bladder tumor ablation (TULA) under local anesthesia to treat small bladder tumor recurrences. He co-leads the GM TULA service and offers techniques like en-bloc bladder tumor resections (ERBT). He contributed to the 2022 GIRFT urology guidance for Bladder Cancer.

Mr. Liew developed the stone multidisciplinary team (MDT) in Wigan, Bolton, and Salford. He is a Key Opinion Leader in Endourology for Richard Wolf, Teleflex, and Coloplast.

Mr. Liew is an active researcher with over 25 publications on topics such as prostate cancer, kidney stone disease, and education. He has served as Principal Investigator in key international trials and was Chief Investigator of the only non-cancer urology trial in the UK in 2021. He earned his MD from the University of Manchester after studying kidney cancer chemotherapy resistance at the Christie Hospital.

Mr. Liew is an associate member of the European Association of Urologists Guidelines Panel for Prostate Cancer and regularly reviews articles for BJUI. He is an accredited Royal College of Surgeons Educational Supervisor and has chaired many training sessions. He is faculty for the award-winning Urology Bootcamp and Course Director for the NW BPH Simulation Masterclass. He is also involved in Antibiotic Stewardship within his NHS trust.
